This program gave an introduction to the Health Consumers’ Council (HCC) and talked about:
- Advocacy – what it is, how HCC ensures that we meet the consumer where they are, listen carefully and work out what it is they want, rather than trying to determine “what’s best for you.”
- The importance of the principles of equity, and how looking after the most vulnerable – Aboriginal people, those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, LGBTIQ people etc – means that you can get the system right for everyone
- Consumer Engagement – HCC’s workshops help people to understand how they can use their lived experience as a health consumer to be part of committees such as Community Advisory Councils in each hospital etc.
- Supporting health services to better engage with consumers
